2019 Bridging Conference to Address Chasm Separating Clinical Research and Health Care
The 2019 Bridging Clinical Research & Clinical Health Care Collaborative will convene March 4–5, 2019, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. The Collaborative, a forum where health care professionals, patients, physicians, academics, clinical researchers, service and technology providers, and regulatory authorities convene to advance clinical research and its link with health care, is working this year with the Learning Health Community (LHC), a nonprofit organization devoted to rapidly sharing knowledge from research results to inform health decisions, thus achieving learning health systems for the benefit of patients.
“The LHC emerged out of the learning heath system (LHS) ideals of the National Academy of Medicine,” said Jonathan Silverstein, M.D., chair of the LHC board. “The Bridging Collaborative has assembled a group focused on the intersection of research and health care, and it makes good sense for us all to work together.”
“The knowledge generated through research moves far too slowly into the hands of clinicians and patients to inform health decisions,” added Joshua Rubin, president and CEO of the Learning Health Community. “The multi-stakeholder consensus LHS Core Values call for ‘generating information and knowledge… and sharing and disseminating what is learned in timely and actionable forms that directly enable individuals, clinicians and public health entities to separately and collaboratively make informed health decisions.’ By working together to bridge clinical research and clinical health care, we can advance this important goal.”
Badhri Srinivasan, head of global development operations for Novartis, served as Collaborative chair in 2018 and will return in 2019 as a keynote speaker. “This event brings together that power of the community, the power of shared intelligence and shared mindsets, so we can then leapfrog faster into new and transformative areas,” Srinivasan said.
The 2019 Bridging Collaborative will build upon the 2018 inaugural program content with exceptional keynote speakers from government, industry, academia; pillar presentations by patients and clinicians; and panels convening prominent thought leaders to debate the issues that impede progress toward building bridges between research and health care such that collaborative solutions can be identified. In addition, there will be focused discussion groups to move forward the LHC consensus action plan.
“Less than 3 percent of patients and clinicians participate in clinical research. To acquire and disseminate more knowledge such that we can transform our health care system and improve patient care, we must all build bridges together,” stated John Potthoff, CEO of Elligo Health Research and co-founder of the Collaborative. “At last year’s inaugural event, we launched these discussions; at the 2019 Collaborative, we will continue to collaborate to foster and implement solutions.”
